The latest products of HAY

published in: Design By Costas Voyatzis, 21 September 2008

The avant-garde Danish company HAY, during the September's Maison & Objet exhibition in Paris presented its new products, the SPIDER WOMAN chair designed by Louise Campbell and the PLOPP stool designed by Oskar Zieta.

SPIDER WOMAN by Louise Campbell
Like most of Louise Campbells furniture Spider Woman does not refer to existing design – its only references are originality and aesthetics. The asymmetrical laser cut web on the shell of Spider Woman repeats the construction of the frame beneath it. The asymmetrical pattern gives Spider Woman spatial freedom and hence the chair is less in need of neat positioning than symmetrical chairs. The pattern points towards an infinite vanishing point and the transparency adds lightness to a material normally perceived as heavy and impenetrable. The “eyes” and “legs” as well as the grid on the shell bear the reference to a spider woman and her web.
Spider Woman is a stackable chair for outdoor and indoor use.

PLOPP by Oskar Zieta
The Plopp stool is composed of two ultra thin steel plates cut into the desired shape and welded around the edges. Finally air under high pressure is shot into the unit causing an expansion into the desired shape. The idea is to make a light construction which is easily mass produced but with a unique result where every single piece of furniture is a one of a kind sculpture.
Using this technology a new piece of steel furniture is created which in its form refers to plastic furniture but with the solidity and wearing qualities of steel. In an era of increasing global warming it makes sense to create products that do not break the day after the expiration of the guarantee certificate.

The Plopp stool has received the prestigious German design prize "Red Dot Design Award".The prize is an acknowledgement awarded to products with the highest standards in innovation, functionality and formal quality. The jury has selected Plopp as one of the award-winners in the category "Product design 2008"

Red dot comment Zieta in switzerland is the manufacturer, Hay the distributor Red dot comment "Plopp is a stable stool made of sheet metal utilising the potential of CNC manufacturing technology and hydro-formed metal surfaces. The result is a light construction allowing mass customisation at low production costs. Still each single item is unique, the respective form resulting from the specific manufacturing process. By selectively placing welds along the interior and adjusting the pressure of the liquid the mould is filled with, targeted deformations can be created. In this way, interior cushions can be formed that are commonly associated with inflatable objects. Accordingly, the retro-futuristic design makes the stool look like a one-off handmade product. "
