Celebrating the cross by "Humans since 1982"
text by Pascal Panagiotidis for Yatzer
Who could ever imagine a Cross as a functional and practical element? Is it a piece of furniture to lie and relax? This may sound kind of contradictory but it seems that two Designstudents of HDK Göteborg's School of Design and Arts in Sweden, Per Emanuelsson and Bastian Bischoff managed to go beyond the religious limits and create a lounge out of this Christian symbol. "Humans since 1982", the nickname of their collaboration, launched the "Surveillance Light"* last year and now they are coming back with the "Celebrating the cross" project, a new practical function of the “cross” symbol. This furniture is quite a challenging concept which will be exhibited at Röhsska Design-Museum in Göteborg, on the summer of 2009. If you don’t manage to have a close look, Yatzer is giving you the opportunity to enjoy this new polarising product through Christoffer T. Duff’s photos.

Hahaha, this place is great to discuss!! Jacques you are like Mary Poppins purse. I bet you could keep going with more and more cross sofas/benches/chairs etc. But the ones you show me are so boring and rigid (forms) that I would choose this one for sure. At least it seems a bit more dynamic. (But now zero originality is growing...) And tragdd you are so right... You just mention Banksy and it all came to my mind. And I think the cameras are a better piece of furniture not only because what you said but because a cross could be any piece of furniture but the cameras share somehow a close relationship with a lamp (or at least in my mind). They do focus over something they have cables and both enable visual conexion. And at the same time its really ironic, as a camera tends to be hidden or unnoticed but here it's way overexposed. You both should check out the Genesis House if you have never seen it: http://www.archdaily.com/11726/genesis-house-palais-de-justice-planda/

Cameras is also every where after Banksy, think 5 years ago started to focus on them. I think lamp in this case is worthier, because it`s icon is older than Justice Cross :)

I am a bit bored of these Iconic forms turned into furniture, buildings, etc... And I like ironic furniture. But since Justice took the cross as his brand mark I started to see it everywhere. There's nothing in the chair that induces me to pray (even though I am not a praying person). And the truth is that it doesn't need the cross to become functional. I would prefer it being a cross not so explicitly. Some objects get more interesting if you find out that the form represents something instead of being literal. The lamp is extremely great!
