Dispatchwork in Berlin

published in: Art By Costas Voyatzis, May 19th 2009

Jan Vormann once again indulged his passion for Plastic! This time, in Berlin, he "dispatched" mostly holes that remained from the World War II.

At some very touristic hot-spots, (Kupfergraben corner with Dorotheenstraße) a whole lot of people of all ages spontaneously started "helping" him with the dispachwork project and plastic construction pieces in all colors, between old stones,  gave an interesting new twist in Berlin.

Some Kids, Parents and Grandparents took the project "to another dimension" with a variation of approaches towards the possibilities of constructing with those little bricks..

The Event was accompanied by an indoor exhibition at  Jarmuschek + Partners gallery , where Vormann showed a handful of Kinetic objects. The exhibition will last until the13th of June.

I like that in plugging in the holes, everyone gets to leave a piece of themselves in place. Like a wishing well..

I personally think that this form of "expression" is wrong, it is taking away from hisory. What is it that this artist is trying to express? in terms of design and whatnot, all it is is randomness, random colour, which dont necessarily look right with the architecture around it. What is this?

How can any form of expression be wrong you idiot, just because the reasons not clear to you why the artist decided to do this doesn't mean it didn't mean something to him. Taking away from history? you talk about history like it's something that should be preserved, boxed up and never used and not something to be built upon which is a really stupid outlook. And litterbug you can just stfu aswell jesus christ it's like the police are everywhere without even being there with all you PC MORONS.

Love it...patching the past's wounds with today's colours. History is organic and you cannot celebrate its stagnation. Refreshing and inspired creativity by a further generation.

HOW can ANY form of artistic expression be wrong? are we still living about 80 years ago? seems as if there`s little consciousness in architectural substance to be USED and FORMED by people. environment should be subject of permanent changes, contribute to human circumstances.

what is littering? We "litter" our world with our stuff. My house is litter. My lawn clippings after I mow...litter. The very words I type here are litter. I am burning fossil fuels with every keystroke. Creating pollution, a burden on society for years to come, but I want my voice heard now and it doesn't matter who suffers down the road. Let's stop with the pointing fingers and appreciate the fact that we have the ability to move forward and try new things. It may not be your cup of tea, but we are all guilty of various transgressions. Because this form of expression transcends the fine line between art and refuse, we are able to collectively say no, it is not litter.

"super: please explain why this is not littering?" When people communicate they can use different forms. What we are using here is writing. For people to communicate effectively they must use the same definitions. Show a little intitative and look up the word "littering". According to wiki'p this is not littering. SS

an individual has a use for history. isn't that why it is there? the past should be acknowledged. not used as a shrine. unless it is a shrine. here in United States we have history but nothing that compares to the rest of the world. where i live on the west coast of U.S.A. i do not see evidence of the battles fought. but you of the European union and beyond live and breathe it and that is who you are. i see nothing wrong with a few days of youthfull play and then it is gone

it is art, which is an expression of the creative mind, to say it's wrong is to call free thought wrong (thoughtcrime); and because it's art, it's not litter, as it is accepted by both the people, and the establishment (apparently) it is now an ongoing cooperative effort. and lastly, jimbob? who cares if i say 'playin with legos' or, 'playin with lego'? the point is Russia is rebuilding, and using entirely experimental materials. the main issue at hand is whether or not they have LMDs

This reminds me of the modern art paintings with a few squares of differing colors and little else. Creative, yet awful. Gives artists with vision and talent (yes, both) a bad name.

this is just another trendy artist with another trendy idea. I'm so seek of coolness!! modernity is the most absurd-boring thing, we literaly are destroying the world and instead of doing something creative and good for it, we keep looking at our own belly button as if the center of the world. what an egotistic and purpose-less thing to do!!! for the glory of who?? the artist? yes, today everything is art, we get that.. but time to move on, I think. conceptual art is the big response for anybody who wants to be an artist nowadays. the idea may be ok though, the colors in contrast with the old war wounds. but ultimately it's litter.. it's PLASTIC!!! so if they don't remove it after a while, there we have another thing to pollute the world for ages... like all the stuff massproduced we find in all the $1 stores.. sickening! let's stop adding useless things to this already overloaded-with-trash-world!!!

I think it draws attention to what the holes are. Someone that walks by those places everyday might never see what they are walking by. It draws attention to what is there. It doesn't seem like the plastic pieces are destructive either which means that it can be taken down. I like it!

Wow! These pictures have special meaning for me. I was born in Berlin after WWII. (My father was from Hamburg, and my mother from Austria. We moved to the U.S. when I was 2.) My EARLIEST MEMORY was of shouting "Tante Eda" (Frieda) out of the window of our apartment to a family friend in the gray-beige building across the street. The colors in some of these pictures are exactly like the image in my memory. Oh, and who doesn't like Legos, and the creativity they allow? For those who think they're ugly, the article states that the exhibit will end, implying that they will be taken down. Today, I love working with stone, and have put in an elaborate paver (concrete block) driveway. Playing with Legos was good practice for doing that kind of work.

The installations don't need to be removed by the artist. They don't stay there for more than a week anyways. What happens is that kids take the pieces home to play with them. So, the idea creates ideas, creates ideas, creates ideas.... Lego stones can be passed on for generations - don't mistake them with plastic bags or bottles just because they are made from plastic. You can throw Lego in the washing machine and the kids of your kids will still be able to play with it. So pleases don't you worry about littering, alright!

I am sure the Lego is gone and on to a new life with in days if not hours. The continuity is cool. New creativity or memories or whatever, the fact is lives and ideas touching each other. Stop hating on each other people. Peace

I am so surprised at how insulting some of you can be to a project that only has a temporary statement. How can something colorful, harmless, and childlike being temporarily displaying in walls that might have been damaged by bombs, revolution, or social unrest be offensive. If you feel the need to insult this project, you might need to see a psychologist to discuss your misplaced anger issues.
