About the Guide // London Design Guide is a new annual publication dedicated to the vibrant and multi-faceted designscape of London.  London’s design scene is widely considered one of the most energetic, diverse, and innovative creative communities in the world. The city is vast and it can be a daunting task discovering its design offerings. London design guide has done the hard work by selecting and reviewing the leading design shops, galleries, and institutions and celebrating the rich mix of design choices in the cosmopolitan capital today.

About the Editor // Max Fraser is the author of several design books: the bestselling Design UK series and Designers on Design co-authored with Sir Terence Conran (Conran Octopus); and the Piet Hein Eek monograph (De Boekenmakers). Internationally, he contributes to a broad range of publications, curates exhibitions, produces video content, judges competitions, and lectures extensively. Tanika, London UK. Favourite design destination has to be the Barbican Centre with its grim, brutalist, harsh high rises and man made lakes and waterfalls, it's my favourite place to escape to when spending days and days in the soulless City banks. The geometry of the terraces on the buildings, semi-circles, hidden walkways and gardens all make it the most explorable built complex that I know of in London, not to mention what the Barbican Centre houses. Cafes, libraries, art galleries, stages, concert halls - a space dedicated entirely to arts, culture. The recent run of exhibitions on Le Corbusier was fantastic - in a reflexive look at architecture... I am always surprised at how such hard, unforgiving, rain-stained buildings could house such a collection of beauty and inspiration inside.

Dear Editor My favourite design destination in London will have to be the Tate Modern. The turbine hall is spatially and empirically unique. The lovely bookstores on two levels sell the most amazing journals in design, art and architecture. And who can beat the views of the Thames, St. Paul's and the Millenium bridge from the seventh floor cafe. A day out at the Tate Modern ticks all the boxes in my London design diary.

Without any dubts the best Design Location in London is MY GRANNY' HOUSE.... ya i know nobody knows, but you have to visit that place. It's a particular mix between italian '50 rational design and a immigrant english pottery taste. YOU CAN'T MISS... i'll send you the address in prv, she'll give you some piece of apple pie, sure.. you can't refuse. this is definitely the best design location in London... for me. Design is not only lines and cold material, it's even emotions.

Alfie's Antique Market in Marylebone's Church Street is incredible, it's the place I go to find that one singular piece I've been looking for not knowing exactly what it was I was looking for. As for more inspirational spaces I don't see how you could beat the British Museum, it reeks of arrogance and conquest, it's filled with the natural and human history of the world to an extent unmatched by any other natural museum. One one hand it's a testament to British Imperialism on the other it is a sincere attempt to catalog all that has existed in human history albeit necessarily abridged. Walking through the galleries I come to realize that context is everything and design is life.

Oh what a gorgeous book I'll have to get it anyways if I'm not a winner, but I've always loved the parks of London, ok they're not man made design but designed by someone amazing, the trees, the gardens (well they are designed by mere mortals). Either way I adore London, always will, like a second home!
