about the book

Building the Future Now // The Iconic Work of a Singular Architect // Zaha Hadid

An excellent book written by the internationally renowned and one of the most popular writers on the subject of architecture // Philip Jodidio, a  Harvard graduate who studied art history and economics, and has edited Connaissance des Arts for over 20 years. His books include TASCHEN's Architecture Now! series, Building a New Millennium, and monographs on Tadao Ando, Norman Foster, Richard Meier, Jean Nouvel, and Zaha Hadid.

Zaha Hadid is undoubtedly one of Yatzer’s favorite!  Hadid is one of the most controversial architects, who only saw her work winning prizes and critical commendation for many years without actually having them executed.  Many believed and claimed that her work was unbuildable.   Yet over the past decade she has completed numerous structures including the Rosenthal Center for Contemporary Art in Cincinnati (which the New York Times called ''the most important new building in America since the Cold War''), the Phaeno Science Center in Wolfsburg, Germany, and the Central Building of the new BMW Assembly Plant in Leipzig.

Zaha Hadid was born in Baghdad, educated and has located her practice in London.  For over 30 years she has designed radical architecture, and is now the subject of this massive TASCHEN monograph.    Covering her complete works to date, and all of her recent work from Dubai to Guangzhou, this XL tome demonstrates the progression of Hadid’s career—including not only buildings but also furniture and interior designs—with in-depth texts, spectacular photos, and her own drawings. Also included is a special section with translucent vellum paper allowing multiple layers of designs to be viewed at once or separately.

Today, Hadid is firmly established among the élite of world architecture, her audacious and futuristic designs having catapulted her to international fame.

About Zaha Hadid

photo © Gautier Deblonde

Zaha Hadid, founding partner of Zaha Hadid Architects, was awarded the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 2004 and is internationally known for her built, theoretical and academic work. Each of her dynamic and innovative projects builds on over thirty years of revolutionary experimentation and research in the interrelated fields of urbanism, architecture and design.
Working with senior office partner Patrik Schumacher, Hadid’s interest is in the rigorous interface between architecture, landscape, and geology as the practice integrates natural topography and human-made systems that lead to experimentation with cutting-edge technologies. Such a process often results in unexpected and dynamic architectural forms.
The MAXXI: National Museum of 21st Century Art in Rome, BMW Central Building in Leipzig and Phaeno Science Center in Wolfsburg are excellent demonstrations of the practice’s quest for complex, dynamic space. Previous seminal buildings, such as the Rosenthal Center for Contemporary Art in Cincinnati and Hoenheim-Nord Terminus in Strasbourg have also been hailed as architecture that transforms our vision of the future with new spatial concepts and bold, visionary forms.
Currently, the practice is working on a multitude of projects including; the Fiera di Milano master-plan and tower, the Aquatics Centre for the London 2012 Olympic Games, High-Speed Train Stations in Naples and Durango, the CMA CGM Head Office tower in Marseille and urban master-plans in Beijing, Bilbao, Istanbul, Singapore and the Middle East.
Zaha Hadid Architects continues to be a global leader in pioneering research and design investigation. Collaborations with artists, designers, engineers and clients that lead their industries have advanced the practice’s diversity and knowledge, whilst the implementation of state-of-the-art technologies have aided the realization of fluid, dynamic and therefore complex architectural structures.
Zaha Hadid’s work was the subject of a critically-acclaimed retrospective exhibition at New York’s Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in 2006 and showcased at London’s Design Museum in 2007. Hadid’s recently completed projects include the Nordpark Railway stations in Innsbruck, Mobile Art for Chanel in Hong Kong, Tokyo and New York, the Zaragoza Bridge Pavilion in Spain and the Burnham Pavilion in Chicago.

Long Tran United States J.S. Bach Chamber Music Hall is my favorite. I'm becoming a huge fan of her smaller projects. We're used to seeing her massive sprawling designs but it's nice to see her aesthetic and ethos translates well into smaller personal spaces. The Chamber Music Hall is absolutely GORGEOUS! From above it looks like a cross section of a conical shell. It looks like a movie set from Aeon Flux and to think, the varied organic shapes actually help funnel sound directly down to the seated audience. I also love the stark juxtaposition of white/black. It's just nice to see not all music halls have to be wood and glass.

My favorite Hadid work is Maggie's Centre Fife, for many reasons. Aesthetically the building is magnificent, the sharp lines and protruding window panes leading to a dramatic affect. The primary color of black stands out against the English backdrop, with the giant glass facade of the entrance lending a sweeping view of said landscape. Design aside, the cause of the building is heroic upon itself-- an informative care center for Cancer patients and survivors, as well as friends & family. Perfection from conception to completion, and completely expected from someone as great as Zaha Hadid.

"Niche" - Centrepiece with interposable elements. I choose it because hadid is not just architecture, its objects are in continuous lines of his buildings."Niche" is an object passed as it is flexible and does not form resembles. Dear Yatzer My favourite Zaha Hadid building of all time is and will be the Vitra Fire Station in Weil am Rhein. It remains my favourite as it starkly beautiful and exquisitely detailed right down to the electrical sockets. The spatial quality and materiality of the building is so stimulating. This is not a building for non-architects. It is an architect-architect's building. I also vote this as my favourite as it goes to prove that RIBA in London and the powerful lobby of high-tech architects ensconced in London could not bare to give Zaha Hadid a project in London to start her extraordinary practice. It will never cease to amaze me that Zaha Hadid continues her practice from London. She is definitely very brave and the brightest of all those work from London! Upwards and onwards....

My favourite design project is bergisel ski-jump, innsbruck, austria, because of its spectacular shape and its fascinating lightweight form.

The LFOne pavillion in Germany is the first (and one of the few) Hadid project that's been really inspiring to me. A dynamic yet ''natural'' form. Long before Rhino took over...

I love Hadid's collaboration with Melissa shoes into the fashion world. Her style is disctinctly recognisable in any of her design ventures!

Silken Hotel Puerta Amιrica - even the genious Antoni Gaudν would have loved those beautiful futuristic organic designed rooms, it breathes light and it's so clean that I would want to paint something on the walls, but trust me, I won't ;) - Joachim Van Durme - Belgium
