Fortune is the installation presented in this year Milan Furniture fair by German designer Mark Braun in collaboration with the well-known Austrian company J. & L. Lobmeyr. We discovered Fortune, at the exhibition POETRY HAPPENS where authentic, archetypal projects, prototypes and installations with a narrative design quality have been displayed.
Fortune installation is a modern exposé of typical carafes but with a twist. Made out of glass, a material that J. & L. Lobmeyr has been working with for almost 200 years, all 21 pieces presented have been carved with the image of a specific body water of our planet using three different processes of engraving. Outlines of Lakes, Rivers and Glaciers decorate the water carafes emphasizing in this way glass on the one hand and water on the other. The natural and the simple are integrated in the design process of the glass carafes, which show a love affair and sensitivity both with the material and the concept.
In every single glass carafe people can enjoy the delicate engravings and what they represent. The designs make a bold statement about the value of water in our life and the raise awareness about the state of one of the most important sources of life. At the same time, these water carafes embody a long-standing tradition of glass making by J. & L. Lobmeyr. Contemporary designer Mark Braun has personalized them in a unique way picturing one thousand words in each glass carafe. Graphic designer Anna Sartorius created postcards showing each lake, river and glacier with images from Google Earth and information comparing the area of water with the amount of time the engraving took.
