For most of us, Halloween signifies the one day in the calendar year when we celebrate everything ghoulish; an occasion to wear terrifying, macabre costumes and scare the living daylights out of our friends and family. But it is also a time to remember the deceased. Death, as the inevitable fate of every human, has inspired art since the beginning of history. In tune with the holiday spirit, we have brought together a selection of our favourite artworks featuring the most ancient symbol of death: the human skull. From pop-art to fine art, graphic design to fashion, here are some ingenious takes on the skull and its symbolism.
