Gulp by Tim Fishlock adds one more item to his collection of recycled series.  We’ve seen his work before on Yatzer with What Watt? Chandelier.

This time the designer came back with a very interesting concept, by using three thousand translucent drinking straws he constructed a lampshade.  Straws are such a funky and playful material, I guess the reason most of us like them is because it takes us back to our childhood constructions.  The three thousand translucent straws have been interwoven to form a dense, spherical lampshade.   The use of translucent straws is surprisingly beautiful despite the plastic clutter.  I guess what makes it so appealing is the transparency of the straws, as well as its size.  In any other case size wouldn’t be an issue, however, in order to construct this lampshade and interconnect the straws, it takes Fishlock seven days with a total diameter of 80cm.

Furthermore, each piece is made to order and the collection of Gulp lampshades is strictly limited to 50 editions.  The lampshade comes with an authenticity hand embossed print which will be signed by Tim Fishlock.  I have to admit that this lamp very much reminds us of Random Light by Bertjan Pot for Moooi, but on the other hand I have to be honest and say that the techniques used are very different and of course Gulp has a level of difficulty in its design as it takes a very long time and patience to get assembled.  We actually like it a lot and would definitely love to see it in different colors; what about black or red?

I love this. I want one! This gave me a crazy idea. Time to write it down and pursue it. Its amazing how some of the most interesting work emanates from some of the most overlooked things from our daily lives. Yatzer the spam prevention questions makes me wonder if I should receive a Kindergarten diploma from Yatzer! I am polishing my math. I love it! :-)
