ETT HEM is Swedish for ‘A Home’. A phrase that encompasses all that it stands for when residing in this Hotel. The designers behind it, British interior designer Ilse Crawford of Studioilse and Swedish owner Jeanette Mix, have renovated the 1910 Swedish building originally designed by architect Fredrik Dahlberg, converting it into a hotel where luxury resides.

Located on Sköldungagatan, in Stockholm’s upmarketLärkstan district, it is stated very strongly that this is not a luxury hotel but a hotel where you see, touch and enjoy luxurious elements. Originally built for an official and his wife, this structure has a beautiful history, surrounded by beautiful things. The original lady of the house had a love for the aesthetics of Karin Larsson - the wife of the famous Swedish water-colour painter Carl Larsson(1853-1919) - who collected objects, textiles and furniture from all over Sweden.  The Arts were a great part of the couple’s lives and the residence incorporates this through truly unique ‘objèts’ and artwork. Yes this house had the privilege to be brought up amongst true eclecticism. Ett Hem has always contained beautiful things such us the finest furniture, antiques and designs, and like all great homes where great women have left their aesthetic footprint, opens its doors to us and allows us to get very close indeed.

Ett Hem, Stockholm by studioilse

The purely fascinating element about this hotel that excites us is not solely the design but also the lifestyle that revolves around it.Keeping the true essence of the house’s original atmosphere intact, this hotel functions like your best friend’s home. Your elegant best friend’s home, is there any other kind? At Ett Hem, the idea is to feel at home. You can comfortably go downstairs in the middle of the night with your blanket and your cashmere shocks, open the fridge, take out that large slice of chocolate cake and eat it right in front of the fire place. It is everything that you have dreamed your best friend’s home to be. Of course for friendly relaxed chats accompanied by a glass of Bordeaux, the courtyard garden is greatly advised. Acting like a secret city wilderness, this is the first thing you see once those college entrance doors open.

Inside, especially in the winter months, you’re greeted by a lit fire place leading you to the downstairs sitting room designed for maximum lounging. The atmospheric wall palette and wood paneling create the absolute atmosphere of comfort, warmth and elegance. One can imagine being lost amongst the library’s books stacked high with its pleasurable tomes, and then lying on one of the large sofas taking everything in. Next to that is one of our favorite spaces, the leafy glass house. Here, ample natural daylight and atmospheric night star watching make this space very real. The exposed brick, with the glazing and the floor tiles in combination with the different style seating, rustic furniture and the light soft finishes truly encompass a private residential feeling. One can easily envision a family waking up with their coffees and sitting around this space.

The twelve bedrooms upstairs have been designed with the exact same comfort language as that of a private residence. Atmospheric earthy wall tones compliment the herringbone wood flooring, where  poster beds and the love seat sofas in front of them, provide the perfect resting place for a couple to sit down and take their shoes off whilst languishing in front of the burning fireplace. Walking bare foot into the bathroom the marble free standing tub filled with warm water to soak and relax in, in the true old-fashioned way, goes to further illustrate that these are the joys of delight. The beautiful antique chandeliers are amongst the unique pieces to be admired along with the owner’s private artwork collections inside the bedrooms and throughout the grounds.

The complete ideology of Ett Hem hotel comes through the pleasure of being so close to beautiful things, of being in spaces that tell a story, and to a degree, of being left alone to live in this very special house. Yes, this is a hotel were luxury truly resides and the most luxurious element is the choice of lifestyle freedom offered to its guests.
