From roasting, to brewing, to pouring, the art of speciality coffee making is all about precision and patience. Greek architect Vicky Poriki of Ioannina-based VP Architectural Studio has managed to channel these qualities into the design of Flow microroastery which recently opened its doors in Veroia, a small town in Northern Greece. Located on the ground floor of a modern apartment building, the space combines a minimalist aesthetic that conveys the establishment’s no-nonsense attitude towards coffee making, along with handcrafted furnishings and tableware that reflect the baristas’ attention to detail.

Poriki is no stranger to designing cafés – KOFI microroastery in her hometown of Ioannina stands out for its creative fusion of industrial and retro elements – so the understated sophistication of this project comes as no surprise. Officially named ‘φλόου’, a Greek transliteration of ‘flow’, the venue is a bright and airy space thanks to the double-height space, open-plan layout, large windows and a muted colour palette. Running the length of the space, a counter delineates the public zone from the preparation area allowing the coffee making process to take centre stage. A series of slim light pendants above the counter draw further attention to the baristas’ working their magic while a staircase hidden behind a slatted screen leads to a mezzanine level at the back where the roasting equipment is located.

Underpinned by clean lines, simple forms and a predominantly white colour scheme, Flow’s minimalist interior is a serene, contemplative environment. Complementing the white hues, light-toned natural wood finishes add warmth and texture as well as convey a sense of hand-craftsmanship, while potted plants, including an olive tree, introduce green accents and further enhance the Zen ambience. Bespoke timber furnishings such screens, tables, chairs and shelving where the roastery’s products are displayed enhance the minimalist aesthetic in their simplicity. From the meticulous woodwork, to the hand-crafted coffee cups, Poriki’s attention to detail artfully underlines the venue’s championship of quality and precision.
