Is this a Fellini movie or is it real life? At Zampanó, you’ll be halfway through dinner and you still won’t be able to tell! This doll-like bistro doesn’t just draw magic from its interior decoration, it’s built on an entirely different worldview, carefully reflected in every single aspect of the business. Having travelled far and wide, creatively-minded owners Epaminondas Skorpideas and Dimosthenis Misentzis pieced together their whimsical mise-en-scène with flea market finds from all over the world, making sure each one had a story to tell.
Zampanó's corner location is a wonder in and of itself, complete with authentic early 1900 features and aristocratic undertones, brought to life by Sicilian architects and interior designers Maurizio and Giuseppe Alito. So when your server looks like an unlikely combination of a circus strongman and a French mime artist - sporting the obligatory tattoos, handlebar mustache, Breton shirt and newsboy cap - then you just have to wonder: is this place run by a circus troupe? Is it going to be here next time I stop by or is this a passing reverie? The only thing that brings you back to reality is the unapologetically Greek menu and their amazing selection of local wines, as if you needed another reason to come back! If, despite your best efforts, you’re simply unable to tear yourself away, just book a room at the City Circus hostel, connected to Zampanó through the attic, which shares the same fairytale sensibilities and actually belongs to the same people. Sleep tight!
