Translating a globally recognisable brand into a new cultural context is a delicate exercise. Too faithful, and it risks feeling generic; too site-specific, and the brand’s identity dissolves. STAPLE's Shanghai flagship negotiates this tension with notable precision, projecting the New York streetwear label’s DNA while embedding it within Shanghai’s layered urban fabric.
Located on Huaihai Middle Road, one of the city’s most popular shopping destinations, the store unfolds a dual-city narrative shaped by one of the brand’s most enduring symbols: the pigeon. Designed by multidisciplinary design studio DESIGN AT PRESENT, the project positions the bird as both a guide and a mediator, linking the grit of New York with the textured memory of Shanghai. By leveraging symbolic elements such as construction scaffolding and reclaimed local materials, the design constructs an immersive spatial story that feels at once anchored and mobile, much like the cultures it references.

This narrative begins on the street, where a vivid pink metal façade, punctured with tiny, claw-like perforations, stands out against its urban surroundings. Bursting through it, a monumental pigeon sculpture overlooks passers-by, forming a striking installation that is both spectacle and signifier, whimsically distilling the brand’s urban mythology.
Inside, the dialogue between New York and Shanghai becomes more nuanced. Hanging racks reinterpret the language of New York scaffolding, their tubular structures introducing an industrial cadence that contrasts with the patinated brick surfaces that nod to Shanghai’s older dwellings. Reclaimed wood and metal mesh extend this material narrative across display tables and cabinets, evoking a loosely defined “pigeon house” aesthetic that feels both improvised and deliberate.
Moments of levity punctuate the otherwise restrained palette. A lounge area, anchored by soft pink seating and a tongue-in-cheek “pigeon poop” rug, invites pause and social interaction, softening the store’s industrial edge. Nearby, the checkout counter is clad in vivid mosaic tiles, its chromatic intensity offset by a backdrop of dark reclaimed timber.

Perhaps the most evocative of spaces are the fitting rooms, which invert the visitor’s perspective, placing them metaphorically in the pigeon’s position. In the larger room, an LED screen embedded in the floor continuously loops skyline footage from New York and Shanghai, offering a vertiginous, bird’s-eye view of both cities. The smaller fitting room, wrapped in timber and saturated with pink carpeting, provides a more intimate counterpoint, akin to the interior of a pigeon house, balancing warmth with a subtle streetwise edge.
Rather than merely exporting a retail concept, the STAPLE Shanghai flagship reframes it. Through a careful layering of references, materials and spatial cues, it constructs a retail environment that is less about display and more about orientation, enabling the brand to be situated within a broader, transnational urban narrative.
