Patience is definitely a virtue that young Portuguese visual artist Luis Dourado possesses. For his latest piece of work, from 2010 to 2013 between Berlin, Germany and Oporto, Portugal, he has been working on a project to complete 250 limited edition '''UNTITLED'' books recently released by SAUNA the independent publishing house. As each book is offset printed, hand drawn page by page, book by book, it is immediately apparent how much patience is actually needed!
So the question that begs to be asked, is how precious can an ''UNTITLED'' book be? Although the official price of the book is 25€, in reality it is priceless. Linked to his legacy, Luis Dourado collected all his family photographs from 1978 till 1984, the year he was born and then scanned, archived and studied them in order to create a tribute-book-object.
''UNTITLED'' materializes a thought about randomness and chance. It is an emotional game where the artist wonders about what his family would be like if he’d never been born. For each photo Luis Dourado created an intervention, an art-worked-presence that he repeated over the whole edition in order to invite us on a private journey. It is a supposition, a wonder through memories; a speculative archive about bounds and history.
The book is also available in 55 limited edition copies along with one unique poster designed by the multi-talented Inês Nepomuceno. The art edition's price is 35€ (including shipping).
