Luminous Nomads: The Most Beautiful Portable Lamps for Indoors & Out

Words by Costas Voyatzis

This year’s Milan Design Week pulsed with creative energy (as our highlights reveal), lit in every sense by the return of Euroluce, the biennial lighting exhibition nestled within the halls of Salone del Mobile. Amid a luminous array of sculptural pendants, immersive installations, and conceptual showpieces, it was the quiet elegance of the portable lamp that repeatedly drew our attention. Designed for movement, intimacy, and adaptability, these cordless companions are becoming modern-day essentials, casting a soft glow over dinner tables, terraces, and bedside alcoves.

Of the many we encountered, a select few stood out for their originality, presence, and thoughtful execution. Some reimagined vintage silhouettes and classic lantern forms; others embraced sleek minimalism or ventured into sculptural territory, blurring the line between art object and everyday utility. Whether dimmed with a twist, powered by magnetic chargers, or glowing from within, these designs revealed a deep sensitivity to both form and function. Materials, too, played a central role—from woven rattan and coiled rope to canvas wraps and polished finishes, tactility met technology in quietly captivating ways.

While AI algorithms can suggest an abundance of options, true curation resists automation, because taste isn’t programmed, it’s instinctual. Which is why we’ve curated this selection of the most captivating portable lamps from Euroluce and beyond, each one chosen not for its engagement metrics, but for its design integrity and emotional resonance.

Teo Lamp by Salvatori
Designed by Luca Nichetto (2024)
For Indoor Use Only

We first encountered Teo lamp at Salvatori’s Milanese showroom last autumn, and its quiet presence immediately stood out. Inspired by architect I. M. Pei, Italian designer Luca Nichetto has crafted a refined balance between the weight of stone and the lightness of paper. A solid base, available in Carrara marble and other natural stones, anchors a rolled paper shade that diffuses a warm, ambient glow. Simple yet poetic, the design invites personalisation: the paper can be swapped for different patterns or colours, allowing the lamp to evolve with its surroundings.
