Undeniably, it’s been a rough year-and-a-half for the hotel industry – travel restrictions, lockdowns, and health protocols have meant plummeting occupancies, forced closures and reluctant guests. Then again, out of adversity comes opportunity as Benjamin Franklin once famously said, as is the case with Camp Hox, an opportunity to go on a swanky road trip with your very own campervan in exploration of England’s scenic south-east coast, Normandy’s postcard-pretty nature, Holland’s rural scenery and California’s wine country. Organized by London-based hotel chain The Hoxton after the success of last summer’s glamping pop-up in the English countryside, Camp Hox 2021 combines the indulgence of the brand’s luxury hospitality with the adventure and sheer joy of the open road with four international routes.

With every aspect of the trip taken care of, from the VW T6 and Mercedes Sprinter campervans, to curated itineraries and booked campsites, to essentials like toiletries, linens, towels and drinks, this is the rare kind of road trip you don’t need to spend any time preparing or stressing about. Taking into account the convenience of such a unique staycation proposition in conjunction with how desperately we need a bit of escapism after a year of tough lockdowns, we expect Camp Hox 2021 to be sold out in no time.

Available between May and August 2021, Camp Hox’s four thoughtfully designed routes are centred on the brand’s London, Paris, Amsterdam and Downtown Los Angeles outposts – not only do the trips set off from there, they also culminate there as guests spend the final night in the city, a welcome change after three days and nights of campfires, wild swims, BBQ dinners and drinks under the stars. Make no mistake though, these are not your typical road trip. Curated by the Hoxton team, the itineraries include the best off-the-beaten path beauty spots, beaches, rambles, picnic stops and local lunch recommendations, while the campervans come equipped with Hoxton linens and towels, Blank toiletries, Roberts radios and Origin coffee – namely all the essentials you’d hope to find in a posh hotel room – plus snacks and a mini fridge stocked with soft drinks, beers and wines. What’s more, guests also have at their disposal bikes for off-road adventures, camping chairs for picnic stops and portable barbecue for dinners so they can diverge from the set program as they please.

From the meadows and working farms of East Sussex and the sandy beaches of the Kent Riviera, to the castles, fishing villages and dramatic cliffs of Normandy, to the glimmering lakes, rugged islands and enchanted forests of northern Holland, to the scenic ocean vistas of the Pacific Coast Highway and the vineyards of Paso Robles wine country in California, Camp Hox offers Londoners, Parisians, Amsterdammers and Angelinos alike the chance to hit the road and explore beautiful landscapes and lesser-known spots without straying too far from home – a quite thrilling proposition for the cautious times we live in.
